a program of the EUREKA SPRINGS HISTORICAL MUSEUM
Honoring Louis and Elsie Freund
When Louis and Elsie Freund first visited Eureka Springs in the late 1930s, an old time resident remarked, "Eureka is dead, but it sure is laid out pretty." The quaint mountain village that once drew thousands of health-seeking visitors each year had fallen on hard times. Despite the dust and rust and ragged facades that greeted the Freunds during that fateful visit, they saw opportunity for a renaissance.
By 1939, they had started the very first art school in Eureka Springs, and through additional efforts via the Eureka Springs Guild of Artists and Craftspeople, Eureka Springs Historical Museum, and Centennial Mural, Louis and Elsie spent decades establishing Eureka Springs as an exciting new arts and culture destination in the Ozarks.
The aim of the FREUNDS.ORG program is to celebrate the lives and legacy of the Freunds by awarding an annual scholarship as part of the Louis and Elsie Freund Endowment for Young Artists, and also to showcase the Freunds Vision Plan Expansion of the Eureka Springs Historical Museum.
